we had scheduled our 2nd Living Room Conversation (months in advance). Several people had already contacted me that morning to say they were not in the emotional space to be able to participate in a conversation about politics that evening. And to be honest, if I hadn’t been facilitating, I probably would not have shown up either. But do you know what happened?
Having the chance to hear from and talk with people on the other side of the political spectrum in a facilitated space, I actually left feeling hopeful. I realized there is something healing about being able to actually connect across difference by focusing on the human being underneath their political position.
In fact, research shows that being able to talk and listen to those on the other side of the political spectrum can actually be a way to reduce hostility, suspicion and polarization. But we need the right conditions for such a conversation in order to promote understanding rather than fear.
This is just why our Beverly Living Room Conversations series is so important. Our communication agreements and guided discussions foster courageous conversations where we can both listen with curiosity and express different views. We are not seeking agreement but mutual understanding and trust.
Take a risk, do something a bit different! Come out for our Living Room Conversations at the Beverly Public Library next Thursday November 7. You will gain tools and confidence and hope! By using clear communication agreements, questions curated in advance, and timed go-arounds, we help you practice slowing down and listening to connect and build trust.
Come practice with us! Learn to strengthen your conversation muscle one question at a time. And bring a friend–especially the one whom you’re a bit nervous talking politics with!
How do we deal with our political differences?
